What's the weather like in Bangalore?

Bangalore, the Garden City, boasts a delightful climate that often feels like nature's own air conditioning. With average temperatures hovering between 15°C to 30°C, the weather is typically mild, but don't be fooled—when the sun shines, it can feel like a warm hug from a friendly giant. Monsoon season, from June to September, brings refreshing downpours, turning the city into a lush paradise, albeit with the occasional traffic jam that seems to have a personal vendetta against punctuality. And while winter (December to February) is almost chilly, locals jest that it’s just a reason to flaunt their cozy sweaters! So, whether you're basking in the sun or dodging raindrops, Bangalore's weather always keeps you guessing—and perhaps a little soggy.

Frequently asked questions about Bangalore

Can I actually get a taxi without a smartphone app?

Yes, but good luck! In Bangalore, hailing a cab the old-fashioned way is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Most taxis are booked through apps like Uber or Ola, and if you try to flag one down, you’ll likely be met with confused looks. If you must go old school, try your luck at a hotel or restaurant where they might have contacts. Just don’t expect them to be on time or even show up at all!

Is it true that Bangalore's traffic can make you lose track of time?

Absolutely, it's a time warp! Traffic in Bangalore is legendary for its unpredictability. A 10-kilometer trip can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the time of day and your route. Plan your outings accordingly, and maybe carry a book or download a podcast for those unexpected delays. Pro tip: avoid traveling during rush hour unless you enjoy a little existential crisis.

Do I need to dress like a local to blend in?

Not really, but it helps! Bangalore's fashion scene is a mix of traditional and modern styles. While you can wear whatever you want, if you want to blend in, ditch the shorts and tank tops and opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Plus, it’s a great excuse to buy some stunning Indian fabrics!

What’s the deal with the street food safety?

It’s a gamble, but worth it! Street food in Bangalore is delicious, but it can be a double-edged sword. While some stalls are clean and serve fresh food, others might be, well, questionable. Stick to busy vendors with a high turnover of food, and don't shy away from asking locals for recommendations. Just carry some antacids as a backup plan!

Are all the cool cafes Instagram-worthy?

Oh, absolutely, and then some! Bangalore is packed with cafes that are not just great for coffee but also for your Instagram feed. From quirky interiors to stunning views, you'll find plenty of spots to snap that perfect shot. Just be prepared to share your table with other Instagrammers, as these places can get packed with fellow photo enthusiasts!

Can I trust the Wi-Fi in cafes and hotels?

Not unless you’re feeling lucky! While many cafes and hotels in Bangalore offer free Wi-Fi, the reliability can be spotty at best. You might find yourself battling slow connections or, worse, no connection at all. If you need to get work done, consider investing in a local SIM card with a decent data plan as a backup.

Got a question about Bangalore? Fire away!

Answer:
Hey Josh! While Michael and I only spent 5 days in Bangalore, we did get a pretty good feel for the city, especially since we have two friends living there who showed us around like locals.
The "Garden City" nickname definitely feels a bit nostalgic now - Bangalore has changed enormously with all the tech development. That said, there are still some truly beautiful green spaces that have survived the tech boom!
Cubbon Park was our absolute favorite. It's this massive 300-acre lung in the middle of the city with these gorgeous old trees, flowering plants, and even some historic buildings. We spent a Sunday morning there when they close it to traffic, and it was packed with locals doing yoga, jogging, or just relaxing on the lawns. It felt like discovering the city's soul amid all the concrete.
Lalbagh Botanical Garden is another gem - it dates back to the 1760s! We visited during a flower show (our friends timed our visit perfectly), and the glass house was filled with the most incredible floral displays. Even without a special event, the ancient trees and lake make it a peaceful retreat.
What surprised us most was finding smaller neighborhood parks tucked away between tech campuses and apartment blocks. Our friends took us to a lovely little park in Indiranagar where elderly gentlemen were playing chess under banyan trees while tech workers sat nearby with laptops.
So is Bangalore still the Garden City of old? Not exactly. The rapid growth has definitely eaten into the greenery. But those historic gardens that remain offer something special - these beautiful pockets of calm where you can see how the city balances its tech-forward identity with its natural heritage.
If you go, just plan your garden visits for early morning or late afternoon to avoid both the heat and the traffic!
Love, Merel
