Just 19km off Perth's coastline lies one of Western Australia's most treasured island getaways and home to the internet-famous quokka - the world's happiest animal! Rottnest Island (or "Rotto" as locals affectionately call it) quickly became our favorite day trip from Perth. The moment we stepped off the ferry, we understood why Western Australians guard this place so closely. Car-free streets, crystal-clear bays, and the friendliest marsupials you'll ever meet combine to create an almost magical escape from the mainland that feels worlds away from Perth, despite being visible from the shore.
Meet the Quokka
It's no exaggeration to say quokkas are the main reason many tourists visit Rottnest Island. These cat-sized marsupials shot to worldwide fame for their seemingly permanent smile and willingness to pose for selfies. Despite their internet celebrity status, quokkas are actually a vulnerable species found almost exclusively on this island.
Our first quokka encounter happened within minutes of arriving - a curious little fellow hopped right up to us outside the visitor center. Though they look huggable, remember they're wild animals protected by law (with a $150 fine for touching them). The good news? They're naturally curious and will often approach humans, making respectful photos easy to get.

The Perfect Quokka Selfie
Getting a photo with these famous residents has become something of an art form. We spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to perfect our quokka selfies, and learned a few tricks along the way. The key is patience - find a quokka resting in shade, sit quietly nearby, and wait for them to get curious about you.
Quokka Selfie Do's & Don'ts
Do
- Sit or crouch low to their level
- Keep a respectful distance
- Let them approach you
- Take photos during early morning or late afternoon
Don't
- Touch or try to pick them up
- Feed them (human food makes them sick)
- Use flash photography
- Block their path or corner them
Michael's smartphone selfie technique worked best: open the camera app, flip to selfie mode, and place your phone on the ground with the screen facing up. When a curious quokka approaches to investigate, you can snap the perfect shot without invading their space.
Beyond the Quokkas
While quokkas are the stars, Rottnest Island offers much more. The 19-square-kilometer island features 63 stunning beaches, spectacular snorkeling spots, and fascinating military history.
The best way to explore is by renting a bicycle - the island's main transportation as cars aren't allowed. The 22km perimeter road takes you past most major attractions and incredible coastal views.
The Basin
A natural swimming pool with crystal clear water just a short walk from the main settlement. We spotted over 20 different fish species while snorkeling here!
Bike Adventures
Rent a bike ($30/day) and tackle the rolling hills to secluded beaches. Electric bikes available for less energetic explorers - worth every penny for the steep sections!
West End
Dramatic limestone cliffs where New Zealand fur seals can often be spotted. The viewing platform provides stunning panoramas of the crashing Indian Ocean.
Wadjemup Lighthouse
Climb 155 steps for a guided tour offering 360° views across the entire island. The perfect midday activity to escape the sun.
Little Salmon Bay
Our favorite snorkeling spot with a sheltered reef just meters from shore. Bring your own gear or rent from the main settlement shop.
Oliver Hill Battery
Explore WWII gun emplacements and tunnels on a guided tour. The military history of the island surprised us - it was a key defensive position.
Our Rotto Survival Tips
Getting There
Ferries run from Perth (Barrack St Jetty), North Fremantle, and Fremantle (B-Shed). Book in advance - especially on weekends and during summer! The Fremantle ferry is quickest (25 mins) and cheapest (~$30 return).
When to Visit
Avoid summer weekends when locals flood the island. We visited mid-week in April and had beaches almost to ourselves. Pack layers - the island can be windier and cooler than the mainland.
Island Essentials
Bring more water than you think you'll need, sunscreen (seriously - the sun is intense), swimmers, snorkel gear if you have it, and cash. Food options are limited and pricey, so consider packing a picnic lunch.

If you're visiting Perth, don't even think about skipping Rottnest Island. It was hands-down our favorite day trip and worth every dollar. Just remember - one day might not be enough!
