Frequently asked questions about Da Nang

Can I wear flip-flops to a fancy restaurant in Da Nang?

Nope, save those for the beach. While Da Nang is laid-back, some upscale restaurants have a dress code that frowns upon flip-flops. You might be turned away or feel out of place. Aim for smart casual—think nice sandals or shoes that don’t scream “I just rolled out of bed.” Trust me, your feet will thank you when you’re not awkwardly shuffling around in the corner trying to blend in with the well-dressed locals.

Is it a crime to take photos of the locals without asking?

Yup, it can be a big no-no. While many locals are friendly and will happily pose for a photo, snapping candid shots without permission can be considered intrusive. It’s always better to ask first—most people appreciate the respect. Plus, you might get a better shot when they’re smiling instead of looking like you just caught them mid-yawn.

Why are the taxis in Da Nang so confusing?

Because they have a mind of their own. Not all taxis are created equal in Da Nang. Some don’t use meters, while others do, and you might find yourself in a heated negotiation over fares. Stick to reputable companies like Mai Linh or Vinasun to avoid surprises. If you’re feeling adventurous, grab a Grab (the local ride-hailing app)—it’s easier to navigate and you won’t have to play guessing games with the fare.

What’s the deal with the street food stalls shutting down early?

They’re not night owls. Many street food vendors in Da Nang start packing up around 8 PM, so if you’re a late-night snacker, you might find yourself out of luck. The locals eat early, and those delicious banh xeo or pho might be gone before you even get a chance to indulge. Plan your food adventures accordingly, or risk a sad late-night bowl of instant noodles in your hotel room.

Can I just use my credit card everywhere?

Not even close. While some places accept cards, many street vendors and smaller shops operate on cash only. ATMs are available, but they might not always work with foreign cards, and some charge hefty fees. Bring Vietnamese Dong for those delicious street eats and quirky souvenir shops—your wallet will thank you when you avoid those pesky transaction fees.

Why do I feel like I'm in a sauna while walking around Da Nang?

Welcome to the tropical oven. Da Nang can be sweltering, especially from May to August. The humidity is real, and you’ll be sweating buckets just walking to the nearest café. Dress in lightweight, breathable fabrics, and don’t forget to hydrate like you’re training for a marathon. Embrace the sweat—it’s basically a free sauna session, but you might want to avoid that first date until after you’ve showered.

Got a question about Da Nang? Fire away!

Answer:
Hey Henrik! No, unfortunately not everywhere! We noticed that in Da Nang, you still really need cash in many places. Especially at small restaurants, street food stalls, and local markets, cash is often the only option. Big hotels, upscale restaurants, and some tourist shops usually accept credit cards, but it's not really a given.

Our ING bank card, for example, often didn't work at store ATMs, which was a bit inconvenient. We sometimes had to try several ATMs before we could withdraw cash. Always make sure to have some cash on you. It saves you a lot of hassle :-)

Love, Merel
